Avustralya’daki Yunan ve Ermeni lobisinin girşimiyle Avustralya Parlamentosu 1 Mayıs’ta Süryani ve Rumlara soykırımı yapıldığını oybirliğiyle kabul etti.
Böylelikle Avustralya, İsveç’ten sonra Asuri-Süryani ve Rum soykırımını tanıyan ikinci ülke oldu. İsveç Parlamentosu 11 Mart 2010 tarihinde Ermeni, Rum ve Asuri-Süryanilere soykırım yapıldığını kabul etmişti.
Avustralya Eyalet Parlamentosu 5 Mayıs 1998 (17 Nisan 1997-‘Akunq’ web sayfası yöneticileri) günü Ermeni soykırımını tanımıştı. Süryani Evrensel İttifakı (AUA), Avustralya Yunan Konseyi ve Ermeni Ulusal Komitesi Süryani ve Rum soykırımının da kabul edilmesi için Avustralya Parlamentosu nezdinde girişimde bulunmuştu.
Süryani Evrensel İttifakı Başkanı Hermiz Shahen Süryani soykırımının kabul edildiği 1 Mayıs’ın Süryaniler için tarihi bir gün olduğunu söyledi ve diğer ülkelerin de Avustralya’yı izleyeceklerine olan inancını dile getirdi.
Soykırım önergesini Parlamentonun gündemine taşıyan Avustralya Hıristiyan Parti Başkanı Fred Nils “Tarihte yaşanmıiş olayları istesek de değiştiremeyiz. Fakat bunların soykırım yaşamış Süryani, Ermeni ve Rum Halkları için ne denli acı gerçekler olduğunu tanımamız önemlidir” dedikten sonra, kararın Parlamentoda oy birliğiyle kabul edilmesinden büyük mutluluk duyduğunu söyledi.
Soykırım konusunda yaptığı araştırmalarla tanınan Seyfo Center Başkanı Sabri Atman Avustralya’nın soykırımını kabul etmesinin çok önemli olduğunu, daha önce Ermeni soykırımını kabul eden 26 ülkenin benzeri kararlar almaları için sürdürdükleri girişimleri yoğunlaştıracaklarını kaydetti.

The motion was as follow:
Whereas the NSW Parliament passed a motion in 1997 recognising and condemning the Genocide of the Armenians, this House recognises that Assyrians and Greeks were subjected to qualitatively similar genocides by the then Ottoman Government between 1914 – 1923: and
a. joins the Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks communities of New South Wales in honouring the memory of the innocent men, women and children who fell victim to the first modern genocides;
b. condemns the genocides of the Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks, and all other acts of genocide as the ultimate act of intolerance;
c. recognises the importance of remembering and learning from such dark chapters in human history to ensure that such crimes against humanity are not allowed to be repeated;
d. condemns and prevents all attempts to use the passage of time to deny or distort the historical truth of the genocides of the Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks, and other acts of genocide;
e. recalls the testimonies of ANZAC prisoners-of-war and other servicemen who were witness to the genocides of the Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks;
f. recalls the testimonies of ANZAC servicemen who rescued Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks genocide survivors;
g. acknowledges the significant humanitarian relief contribution made by the people of New South Wales to the victims and survivors of the Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks; and
h. calls on the Commonwealth Government to condemn the genocides of the Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks.
