Roman, ilkin darphanede \u00e7al\u0131\u015fan bir k\u00f6lenin imparatorun suretinin oldu\u011fu sikkelerden birine bir keski darbesi indirmesiyle ba\u015fl\u0131yor. \u0130mparatoru g\u00f6z\u00fcnde bir damla ya\u015f varm\u0131\u015f gibi g\u00f6steren bu kusurlu sikkenin dola\u015ft\u0131\u011f\u0131 ki\u015filerin hik\u00e2yeleri de ileride kesi\u015fiyor. Efesli Linus ise heykelt\u0131ra\u015flar soka\u011f\u0131n\u0131n yan\u0131ndaki sokakta lahit kopya etmekle u\u011fra\u015fan bir zanaatkar. Kandilci Feliks, \u015eifa Tap\u0131na\u011f\u0131\u2019n\u0131n kandilcisi. Yaz\u0131c\u0131 K\u00f6le Simonides ise okuma yazma bilmese de kitaplara tutkun oldu\u011fundan koca bir k\u00fct\u00fcphaneye sahip olarak k\u00fct\u00fcphanesine g\u00f6m\u00fclmek isteyen, tek hayali hitabet sanat\u0131nda ustala\u015farak bir defa olsun avukatl\u0131k yapmak olan Roma\u2019n\u0131n en zengin t\u00fcccarlar\u0131ndan Efendi Naso\u2019nun k\u00f6lesi. \u00c7oban Fazelis, hi\u00e7bir t\u00fcrl\u00fc uyuyamayan, da\u011flarda ya\u015fayan, d\u00fcnyadan elini ete\u011fini \u00e7ekmi\u015f, tabiat\u0131n dilinden anlayan bir adam, bir m\u00fcnzevi. T\u00fcm bu insanlar Roma\u2019da, \u0130mparator Diocletianus d\u00f6neminde ya\u015famakta fakat bu d\u00f6nem gerek ekonomik gerek idari gerekse ahlaki a\u00e7\u0131dan Roma\u2019n\u0131n en k\u00f6t\u00fc d\u00f6nemlerinden biri. \u00dcstelik cumhuriyet, senato ve yasa ile me\u015fhur olan imparatorluk art\u0131k tanr\u0131-kral olan Diocletianus\u2019la birlikte istibdat d\u00f6neminde. Kurumlara bakt\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131zda y\u00f6netici s\u0131n\u0131f olan senat\u00f6rler imparatorun g\u00f6z\u00fcne girme tela\u015f\u0131nda oldu\u011fu ve kasada para kalmad\u0131\u011f\u0131 i\u00e7in hamam in\u015faat\u0131n\u0131 Efendi Naso\u2019nun yard\u0131m\u0131yla bitirme derdinde. \u0130mparatorun tek adam y\u00f6netimiyle i\u015flevini zaten yitirmi\u015f senato. Ekonomiye bakt\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131zda ise Fiyatlar Ferman\u0131 g\u00fcnden g\u00fcne de\u011fi\u015fmekte, halk giderek fakirle\u015fmekte, borcunu \u00f6demeyenler ise k\u00f6le olarak sat\u0131lmakta. Bir yandan da insanlar\u0131n hayvanlarla, hayvanlar\u0131n insanlarla, karde\u015flerin karde\u015flerle sava\u015ft\u0131r\u0131ld\u0131\u011f\u0131 Colosseum, kandan, i\u015fkenceden zevk alan bir halk kitlesi. K\u0131saca, akla gelebilecek her \u015fey i\u00e7in farkl\u0131 bir tanr\u0131dan m\u00fcrekkep bir sistem. Ancak, istibdada giden k\u0131r\u0131lma da ilk olarak bu sistemde ya\u015fan\u0131yor \u00e7\u00fcnk\u00fc insanlar Nas\u0131ral\u0131 \u0130sa\u2019n\u0131n tek tanr\u0131l\u0131 dinine girmeye ba\u015fl\u0131yor ve Hristiyanl\u0131k yay\u0131ld\u0131k\u00e7a imparator onlar\u0131n \u00e7arm\u0131ha gerilip yak\u0131larak katledilmesini buyuruyor. Burada \u015funun alt\u0131n\u0131 \u00e7izmeli ki metin boyunca Hristiyanl\u0131k daha \u00e7ok vahdet-i v\u00fccut d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcncesini \u00e7a\u011fr\u0131\u015ft\u0131ran tasavvufi bir izlek \u015feklinde betimlenmekte. Kabaca \u00f6zetlemek gerekirse kahramanlar onlara ceza veren, onlardan kurban isteyen say\u0131s\u0131z tanr\u0131y\u0131 terk ederek onlar\u0131 seven tek bir tanr\u0131ya iman ediyor. Bu ayd\u0131nlanma s\u00fcreci her kahraman i\u00e7in farkl\u0131. Zira kar\u015f\u0131m\u0131zda tarihi fon olarak kullanan, ger\u00e7e\u011fi temel anlamda sadece tek bir noktada k\u0131ran, iktibaslara ve metinler-aras\u0131l\u0131\u011fa baz\u0131 baz\u0131 yer verse de karnavalesk bir eser olmaktan uzakta bir metin var.
